Doctor Introduction
Dr. Harvey J. Mamon obtained his medical doctorate from the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine and completed his residency training in radiation oncology at the Harvard Joint Radiation Center.
Currently, Dr. Mamon is the director of the Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology Department at the Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Mamon's research focuses on optimizing the combination therapy of radiation therapy and systemic therapy (including conventional chemotherapy and novel targeted drugs) for the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. The ongoing projects include the use of two radiosensitizing chemotherapy drugs (5FU and gemcitabine) in combination with radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer, the addition of Cox-2 inhibitors in chemotherapy and radiotherapy for rectal cancer, and the cooperation with Dr. Peter Enzinger to test the effect of new drugs combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy for esophageal cancer. Dr. Mamon's other key research areas are developing new technologies for delivering radiation therapy and measuring the effects of radiation therapy on normal tissues. The related projects include evaluating the effectiveness of extracranial stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of liver metastases, as well as assessing changes in cardiac function in esophageal cancer patients after receiving radiation therapy. Later, Dr. Mamon hopes to expand the scope of his research work to include translational projects, such as identifying biomarkers that can serve as prognostic or predictive factors for treatment response, and developing targeted drugs that can be used as radiosensitizers.
